Fake NOKIA Units Now in the Philippines

Recently, CgeNa has been receiving reports of FAKE NOKIA units (which is usually called NOKLA) widely being distributed in the market today. I want to share some stories about people who were victimized and hope this will serve as a warning to everyone.

Victim #1:

My cousin recently sent me a text message persuading me to help him sell Nokia N95 and to my surprise he was selling it at a very cheap price! He said it was just P 18,000.00 and I could sell it up to P 25,000.00 since it is even higher in the market. I was really hyped because N95 is one of the sought after phone nowadays.

Then I started asking my friends and colleagues if they're interested. Much to my dismay, after 2 days my cousin called me up and said it was sold out already and that he wasn't able to get units to sell. He also told me he's not going to get anymore since his friend showed the unit and shocked him with "NOKLA" tag.

Victim #2:

A colleague recently gave a gift to herself from her bonus last month and bought Nokia 6300 and was at the midst of enjoying the features of a brand new phone. While all of a sudden, it freezes and started to garble. She then decided to have it repaired in a Nokia Care Center near her place. But it was turned down and informed that her unit is fake. She terribly got mad because it was branded Nokia and even the packaging look like the real thing. She went back to the store where she bought the phone and was helpless since she couldn't find the store anymore (Tiangges are known to shuffle stalls every now and then). It was tagged regular price but it wasn't genuine.

Victim #3:

At work, Mr.X (not his real name) brought a phone in the office, labeled as NOKIA N94i. To my curiosity this supposed N94i, which besides running Windows Mobile, apparently has a touchscreen and stylus, two-megapixel camera and MP3-playing capabilities. You might think the idea of Nokia releasing a Windows Mobile smartphone is ridiculous when it has its own Series 60 operating system.

So how do we figure out if our phone is genuine or not?

Tips to Know if the Phone is Genuine or Not:

  • Warranty
Nokia mobile phones bought in the Nokia Store or from its authorized dealers have a blue 12-month limited warranty sticker from Nokia Care slapped on the top or side parts of the phone's box. A Nokia Care Tamper Proof warranty sticker is also found in the mobile phone's accessories such as the charger, battery, memory card, or data cable.

  • Stamp of Approval
All Nokia phones bought from the Nokia Store or any of its authorized dealers have a Tamper Proof Type label at the back of each mobile phone along with the NTC logo and the Type acceptance number as part of one sticker. Also found in the back of the mobile phone is the Nokia tamper proof Warranty Seal.

  • Battery
To see if your battery is the real thing, you have to make sure the hologram label reflects the Nokia Connecting Hands at one angle and the Original Enhancements logo at another angle. When you angle the hologram on the left, right, down and upsides of the logo, you should see 1, 2, 3 and 4 dots on each side respectively
